SSRIs are the most considered antidepression treatment because of their mild side effects aside from the fact that it is the medication with the broadest effect on the symptoms showed by depression.
Finally, electroconvulsive therapy is only being used when a severe depression has not responded to the above treatments. Electroconvulsive therapy or ECT functions by electrically inducing seizures for therapeutic effects. This is made only when all other treatments are not working. This treatment is very immediate and effective and is very helpful in situation such as catatonic depression where in the patient is failing to take any kinds of food which can ultimately outcome to death. It is also very helpful in situation where suicide is seen as hope to come out from a depression. ECT is only used when situations are bordering on hopeless. This is because outcome of ECT is not yet fully studied.
Psychotherapy, biological treatments, and electroconvulsive therapies are just part of depression treatments that can help people with depression. There are also alternative means of treating depression. Acupuncture, exercise, and music therapy are part of this alternative treatment. Acupuncture helps in aiding people with depression by its capability to make the body produce greater level of endorphins which gives the body a feeling of well-being. Exercise functions by producing physiological effects that help counter depression. It is also helpful in lowering stress which can be a factor for depression. And finally, music therapy helps by the ability of music to induce different set of moods. Studies have shown that there are certain parts parts of the brain particularly the sub-cortical centers that are reached by music. This helps depression by breaking off unhealthy emotions. There are many depression treatments available. It’s a matter of how one call for help.
